چکیده

Tri-calcium phosphate (TCP) and cholesterol are major constituents of human stones. Dissolution of TCP by extracts of kulfa (Portulaca oleracea), pathari (Trianthema monogyna), tomato (Lycopersicon esculantum) and grape (Vitis vinifera) has been studied by monitoring Ca content in the filtrate by flame photometer. Grape extract is found to be most effective for dissolution of TCP amongst other extracts studied. All these extracts contain carbohydrate, which interacts with Ca to form a soluble complex. Dissolution of cholesterol has been studied in extracts of kulfa, pathari, tomato and grape and in alcoholic solutions of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA). In dissolved portion, cholesterol was estimated by measuring optical density at λ max = 402 nm using UV-visible spectrophotometer. Amongst all these extracts, tomato is found to be most effective for dissolution of cholesterol. UDCA is found to be more effective in dissolving cholesterol than CDCA.

Gall stone dissolving agents.

During the decade in which the medical dissolution of gall stones has become feasible several drugs have been introduced but only the two listed in the British National Formulary have been intensively evaluated and shown to be effective--chenodeoxycholic acid and the closely allied ursodeoxycholic acid. The dissolution of gall stones was last reviewed in the "BMF" in 1976, at which stage experi...

Stones in the common bile duct: experience with medical dissolution therapy.

Thirty-one patients with radiolucent common bile duct stones received medical treatment. Nineteen had Rowachol, a terpene preparation, eight (42%) achieving complete stone disappearance within 3 to 48 months. Fifteen (including 3 of the above) took Rowachol with bile acid (chenodeoxycholic in 11, ursodeoxycholic in 4) for 3 to 60 months: 11 (73%) achieved complete dissolution within 18 months. ...

Pathogenesis of gallstones.

The three lipids in bile, cholesterol, lecithin, and bile salts (about 90 percent of the dry weight of normal gallbladder bile) are amphipathic substances having both hydrophobic and hydrophilic functional groups. Knowledge of the physicochemical factors of gallstone formation (especially cholesterol stones) has increased in the past two decades. The absolute amount of cholesterol supersaturati...

Gall stone disease without gall stones--bile acid and bile lipid metabolism after complete gall stone dissolution.

Although bile acid and bile lipid metabolism have been studied in established cholelithiasis, little is known about them in patients destined to develop gall stones, but in whom the stones have not yet appeared (prestone gall stone disease). After confirmed complete gall stone dissolution and withdrawal of treatment, gall stones recur frequently. Before the stones reappear, these patients have ...

Dissolution of cholesterol gall stones using methyltertbutyl ether: a safe effective treatment.

Methyltertbutyl ether (MTBE) administered by percutaneous transhepatic catheter rapidly dissolves radiolucent cholesterol gall bladder stones. However, complete dissolution and clearance of non-cholesterol debris is essential to prevent recurrence. In this study we analysed 25 consecutive patients with reference to efficacy and recurrence based on the presence or absence of non-cholesterol ston...
